چکیده

Male sterility of higher plants is a valuable trait used to improve agricultural crops through hybridization. Pollen abortion is a complex and complicated process and the mechanisms involved are actively being studied. Recently, new data on the structure and function of the tapetal cell, changes in Ca distribution, ATPase activity distribution and programmed cell death in anther cells were obtained using cell biology. These data have helped identify the process of pollen abortion and illuminated the mechanisms of male sterility of higher plants, and provide an important link between research on male sterility at the individual and molecular levels. This paper summarizes the recent data regarding the aborting process of male-sterile anthers of Chinese cabbage, wheat and rice obtained using cell biology. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Comparative studies of mitochondrial proteomics reveal an intimate protein network of male sterility in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Plant male sterility has often been associated with mitochondrial dysfunction; however, the mechanism in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) has not been elucidated. This study set out to probe the mechanism of physiological male sterility (PHYMS) induced by the chemical hybridizing agent (CHA)-SQ-1, and cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) of wheat at the proteomic level. A total of 71 differentially exp...

Premature tapetum degeneration: a major cause of abortive pollen development in photoperiod sensitive genic male sterility in rice.

Photoperiod-sensitive genic male-sterile (PSGMS) rice (Oryza sativa L.), a natural mutant found in the rice cultivar Nongken 58, is very useful for the development of hybrid rice cultivars. Despite its widespread use in breeding programs, the initial stage of the abortive development of PSGMS rice and the possible cytological mechanisms of pollen abortion have not been determined. In the presen...

Analysis of Transcriptome of Rice Anther

Important phenomena related to rice, such as Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS), self-incompatibility and sex determination, are involved in sexual reproduction. For rice, the development process of male gametophyte and pollen contains several stages, including pre-meiotic anther (PMA), meiosis (MEI), tetrad (TET), uninuclear (UN) microspore, bicellular (BC) pollen, tricellular (TC) pollen, MEI, ...

The Rice AAA-ATPase OsFIGNL1 Is Essential for Male Meiosis

Meiosis is crucial in reproduction of plants and ensuring genetic diversity. Although several genes involved in homologous recombination and DNA repair have been reported, their functions in rice (Oryza sativa) male meiosis remain poorly understood. Here, we isolated and characterized the rice OsFIGNL1 (OsFidgetin-like 1) gene, encoding a conserved AAA-ATPase, and explored its function and impo...

Control of abscisic acid catabolism and abscisic acid homeostasis is important for reproductive stage stress tolerance in cereals.

Drought stress at the reproductive stage causes pollen sterility and grain loss in wheat (Triticum aestivum). Drought stress induces abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis genes in anthers and ABA accumulation in spikes of drought-sensitive wheat varieties. In contrast, drought-tolerant wheat accumulates lower ABA levels, which correlates with lower ABA biosynthesis and higher ABA catabolic gene expr...
